Anthropic released their 2026 Agentic Coding Trends Report on January 21, calling out eight trends that define how software gets built this year. The thesis is bold: software development is undergoing its most significant transformation since the graphical user interface.

Having spent time with the report and the broader industry research around it, here’s what stands out — and what engineering leaders should actually pay attention to.

The Report’s Framework

The eight trends are organized into three categories:

  • Foundation trends — how development work itself is changing
  • Capability trends — what agents can now accomplish
  • Impact trends — how this affects business outcomes and organizations

This isn’t a speculative forecast. It’s grounded in observed patterns from companies like Rakuten, TELUS, and Zapier that are already operating this way.

Foundation: Engineers as Orchestrators

The headline shift is that engineers are moving from writing code to coordinating agents that write code. The role is evolving toward architecture, system design, and strategic decision-making.

But the nuance matters. While AI shows up in roughly 60% of developers’ work, engineers report being able to fully delegate only 0–20% of tasks. The rest requires active supervision, validation, and human judgment. This isn’t a “let the AI handle it” story — it’s a collaboration story where engineers develop intuitions over time about what to delegate and what to steer directly.

The Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey reinforces this: 84% of developers use AI tools, but trust in AI output has actually declined, with 46% of developers saying they don’t trust the accuracy of AI output (up from 31% the previous year). The biggest frustration, cited by 66% of developers, is dealing with “AI solutions that are almost right, but not quite.”

The practical implication: the skill gap is shifting from “can you write this code” to “can you effectively decompose problems, orchestrate agents, and validate their output.”

Capability: Multi-Agent Architectures

Single-agent workflows process tasks sequentially through one context window. Multi-agent architectures use an orchestrator to coordinate specialized agents working in parallel — each with dedicated context — then synthesize results into integrated output.

Gartner reported a 1,445% surge in multi-agent system inquiries from Q1 2024 to Q2 2025. That’s not hype — it reflects engineering teams hitting the ceiling of what a single agent context window can accomplish and reaching for coordination patterns.

The Rakuten case study illustrates what’s possible: engineers pointed Claude Code at vLLM, a 12.5-million-line codebase, to implement an activation vector extraction method. The agent worked autonomously for seven hours and achieved 99.9% numerical accuracy. That’s a task that would have taken a human team significantly longer, working across an unfamiliar codebase of that scale.

Capability: Security Transforms in Two Directions

Agentic coding is transforming security simultaneously in two opposing directions. As models become more capable, building security into products becomes easier — any engineer can leverage AI to perform security reviews, hardening, and monitoring that previously required specialized expertise.

But the risks are equally real. According to the Veracode 2025 GenAI Code Security Report, nearly 45% of AI-generated code contains security flaws. When LLMs are given a choice between a secure and an insecure method, they choose the insecure path nearly half the time. These tools train on historical repositories and often lack awareness of real-time vulnerabilities.

The Ox Security report on AI code identified 10 architecture and security anti-patterns commonly found in AI-generated code, characterizing it as “highly functional but systematically lacking in architectural judgment.” Because AI-generated code is syntactically correct, it often gets merged without scrutiny — compounding technical debt silently.

The report’s recommendation aligns with what security practitioners already know: embed security architecture from the earliest stages, not as an afterthought. The organizations that bake security tooling into their AI development pipeline — automated scanners on every AI-generated PR, defense in depth — will be the ones that avoid the “6-Month Wall” where accumulated security debt makes applications unmaintainable.

Capability: Beyond Engineering Teams

One of the most significant capability expansions is agentic coding moving beyond traditional engineering. The line between “people who code” and “people who don’t” is becoming more permeable.

TELUS created over 13,000 custom AI solutions while shipping engineering code 30% faster, saving over 500,000 hours total — with an average of 40 minutes saved per AI interaction. Zapier achieved 89% AI adoption across their entire organization with 800+ agents deployed internally. Anthropic’s own internal teams use Claude Code for legal memo drafting, marketing copy generation, and data visualization.

This challenges the long-held assumption that serious development work can only happen in an IDE. Non-technical employees are using agents for debugging network issues, performing data analysis, and building internal tools. Security teams use them to analyze unfamiliar code. Research teams use them to build frontend visualizations.

Impact: Dynamic Surge Staffing and Organizational Change

The report envisions dynamic “surge” staffing — businesses able to spin up engineering capacity on-demand for tasks requiring deep codebase knowledge. Organizations can staff projects dynamically, bringing in specialists for specific challenges without the traditional overhead of onboarding and context-building.

The broader industry numbers support the trajectory. Gartner predicts 40% of enterprise applications will embed task-specific AI agents by end of 2026, up from less than 5% in 2025. The agentic AI market is projected to surge from $7.8 billion to over $52 billion by 2030. But Gartner also predicts over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by end of 2027 due to escalating costs, unclear business value, or inadequate risk controls.

The Reality Check

The report is from Anthropic, which makes Claude — so there’s an obvious commercial interest. That said, the trends align with what multiple independent sources are observing:

The productivity gains are real but nuanced. DX Insight data from 51,000+ developers shows daily AI users merge roughly 60% more pull requests than occasional users. But organizational gains depend on process maturity. Without process adaptations, faster code creation simply shifts bottlenecks downstream to review, testing, and deployment.

Technical debt is a genuine concern. AI-generated code volume is up 75% since 2022 according to GitClear’s GitHub analysis, but review capacity hasn’t scaled proportionally. The quality deficit is projected at 40% for 2026 — more code entering the pipeline than reviewers can validate with confidence. Companies carrying significant technical debt are struggling to capture AI benefits, suggesting organizations need clean codebases before agents can effectively operate.

Trust is declining even as adoption increases. The Stack Overflow survey shows positive sentiment toward AI tools has dropped from over 70% in 2023-2024 to just 60% in 2025. A majority of developers (52%) either don’t use agents or stick to simpler AI tools, and 38% have no plans to adopt them. Only about 130 of the thousands of agentic AI vendors are “real” according to Gartner, with many engaging in “agent washing.”

Four Priorities for Engineering Leaders

The report flags four areas demanding immediate attention:

  1. Master multi-agent coordination — Move beyond single-agent workflows to orchestrated systems that can tackle complex, cross-cutting tasks
  2. Scale human-agent oversight — Use AI-automated code review to maintain quality at the speed agents produce code
  3. Extend agentic coding beyond engineering — Enable non-technical teams to build and automate with proper guardrails
  4. Embed security from day one — Integrate security scanning and review into every step of the AI-augmented development pipeline

What This Means in Practice

The organizations pulling ahead aren’t removing engineers from the loop — they’re making engineer expertise count where it matters most. The shift isn’t from human to machine. It’s from humans writing code to humans making judgment calls about architecture, quality, security, and product direction while agents handle implementation.

The companies that treat this as a strategic capability — investing in process adaptation, security infrastructure, and team enablement — will capture outsized value. The companies that bolt AI tools onto unchanged processes will find modest gains at best and new categories of technical debt at worst.

The trend is clear. The execution is what separates outcomes.
